A Study on the Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Development and Operations of Mumbai Aqua Metro Line 3

Author: Dr. Jayesh K. Rana

The increasing complexity of urban transportation demands innovative solutions that can improve efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. Artificial Intelligence has become a key enabler in the transformation of public transit systems by facilitating intelligent decision-making, automation, and data-driven operations. The Mumbai Aqua Metro Line 3, India's first fully underground metro network, exemplifies the integration of advanced digital technologies into large-scale urban infrastructure. AI-driven applications, including predictive maintenance, automated train operations, intelligent surveillance, passenger flow analytics, and real-time information systems, have enhanced the reliability and effectiveness of metro services while improving the overall commuter experience. This chapter explores the contribution of Artificial Intelligence to the planning, development, and day-to-day functioning of Mumbai Aqua Metro Line 3. Drawing upon both primary survey data and secondary sources, the study investigates public awareness of AI-enabled metro services and evaluates their influence on operational efficiency, passenger safety, and service quality. The analysis reveals that AI technologies play a significant role in improving system performance, optimizing resource utilization, and strengthening commuter confidence in urban rail transport. The chapter further identifies key challenges associated with AI adoption, such as cybersecurity risks, investment requirements, data governance, and the need for skilled human resources. It concludes by emphasizing that the successful integration of AI is fundamental to building resilient, sustainable, and future-ready urban transportation systems capable of meeting the mobility demands of rapidly expanding cities.
