The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is a treasure trove of economic concepts based on fair commerce, sustainable practices and community well-being. In many ways, conventional Indian commerce is characterized by local manufacturing, equitable trade, preservation of resources and decentralized markets that have been established to facilitate development in an inclusive manner and adhering to ecological principles. At the same time, with advances in globalization and industrialization, these indigenous systems became less prominent. Hence, this chapter intends to analyze the importance of traditional Indian trade systems in terms of their contribution to sustainable development. The chapter presents the analysis of various studies and historical documents, emphasizing the ways in which IKS can complement contemporary practices and contribute to the third-party model of sustainable business fit into the SDGs framework.
